Community Extension Activities

Regular camps & outreach programs are conducted & deserving patients get treatment at concessional rates. NITTE (Deemed to be University) has over 20 rural health centers. These rural centers offer free secondary/ tertiary treatment to the community. Patient requiring advanced treatment are brought to the 1000 bedded teaching Hospital.

Department of General Medicine

The department conducts health camps on:

  • 1st & 3rd Tuesday camp at B.C.Road
  • 2nd & 4th Tuesday camp at Farangipet
  • Thursday camp at Nitte
  • Saturday camp at Thalipady
  • Camps at Natekal, Odiyur, Boliyar and Alake

Under the Nerekere Scheme, a majority of the investigations and treatment for patients from camps are conducted free of cost.About 10,000 patients have benefited from more than 30 general health camps in remote villages in collaboration with Rotary, Lions Club and other NGOs.

In all about 16 rural centers have been established ,14 of which are attached to the medical college and provide free secondary / tertiary level treatment to the rural community with over 50000 patients being treated annually. Specialist staff provide consultancy in these rural centers regularly. Interns & P.G s are posted for training.

Department of Cardiology

Reaching the door step of cardiac patients

  • Camps – Reaching to the unreachable –free cardiac consultation, blood pressure, blood sugars, ECG and Echo.
  • Dhanvanthari Camps – Super specialty camps at Northern Kerala.
  • Vajapayee Camps – Super Specialty camps at various places in Karnataka.
  • Camps for school children – to reach children and parents.
  • Camps for government officials – KSRP, Nandini Milk Federation, Fisheries College.
  • Camps conducted in association with NGOs, Rotary Clubs and Lions Club.

Department of Orthopaedics

  • Department consultants visit medical centre, Nitte twice a month as a part of rural outreach programme and conduct required screening as well as therapeutic treatment.
  • Department consultants visit medical centre, B.C Road twice a month as a part of rural outreach programme and conduct required screening as well as therapeutic treatment.
  • Department consultants also participated in the Kshema Sanchalana Megha Camp at Sirsi, Kumta & Yellapura.
  • Department conducted free medical camp as part of bone and joint week on August 05.08.2017 at Karwar.

Department of ENT

  • HPL camp – A project to evaluate truck drivers who are prone to noise induced hearing loss and tobacco chewing and educate them about measures to reduce exposure to noise and avoid tobacco consumption.
  • "CHINTHANA" - A teaching programme for UG students (Permanent display of instruments), Audiovisual teaching methods, two-way Audiovisual communication from OT.
  • "NISHABDHA" Project to create awareness regarding Noise induced hearing loss in high risk population.
  • The High risk population screened under the project are
    • Traffic Police
    • Foundry workers
    • Dental Faculty and technicians
  • Music therapy for Inpatients
  • "AKSHARA" programme for patient education
  • Department has started Mangalore Laryngectomee Club in association with International Laryngectomy Association, Florida. (Union of people who underwent Laryngectomy, (i.e voice box removal))

Department of OBG

Natekal camp card and Sevanjali card issued to the camp patients where all antenatal investigations are made totally free. All normal deliveries, Caesarean sections including medicines are made free. Sterilisation immediately after delivery are made free. Our staffs attend on the 9th of every month to Natekal PHC for free antenatal visits under Pradhan Manthri Matritva Suraksha Abhiyaan (PMSMA) Scheme.

Department of Dermatology

Regular camps & outreach programmes are conducted & deserving patients get treatment at concessional rates.

  • University has established 20 rural health centers of which 16 are attached with Medical College. These rural centers offer free secondary/ tertiary treatment to the community. Patient requiring advanced treatment are brought to the 1000 bedded teaching Hospital.
  • The department participates in health camps at the rural health centres attached to the Institution.
  • It provides regular health care services at BC Road, Farangipete, Thalipady, NitteGajria Hospital, Karkala.

Patients are benefited by the participation of the department in the camps conducted by the Hospital

Department of Pulmonary Medicine

The Department of Pulmonary Medicine conducts camps as per the policies of Nitte University and Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital. Patients are referred from rural health centers to the department in view of tertiary care.

Department of Nephrology

The department has two satellite dialysis units with 4 bedded dialysis stations in Karkala and 5 bedded dialysis in Puttur with a total of 50 patients on dialysis and they are seen once a week on out- patient basis and managed by the medical consultants in the unit. The department has plans on setting up a peritoneal dialysis therapy unit in the near future.

Department of Anaesthesiology

Department is actively involved in CPR training for all doctors as well as field workers including awareness about medical emergencies and first aid. Moreover, department offers training in first aid and CPR for general public especially school children on regular basis. More than 6,000 public received training in CPR during 2016-17.

Department of Psychiatry

Faculty members participated in alcohol de-addiction camps at various places of Karnataka and Kerala and free mental health camps held in collaboration with the Rotary Club, Lions Club, SKDRDP and other social services organisations. Awareness programmes too, are organised for the public. Community outreach programs are held at Nitte and Bailoor (Rural Psychiatry Centers).

Community Psychiatry

To break the stigma associated with mental illness and to provide help, we decided to be sensitive to the changing mental health needs and to extend our mental health treatment into communities that had never received them.

Nitte Rural Psychiatry Services is one such community mental health initiative of our institute, under the Department of Psychiatry where we cater to 50-60 patients on a daily basis. It was the first of its kind and was initiated in the year 2007.The main aims of this centre is to identify patients, educate and spread awareness, home visits to those who skip follow-up, to provide rehabilitation and to integrate these individuals with the community.

We have also extended our services to the Primary and Community Health Centres in Vittla, DK District, Mangalore.

To make our community addiction free and to break the chain of substance use, we conduct de-addiction camps at Ujjire which is being sponsored by Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP). We provide psychoeducation and psychiatric speciality services, treat the withdrawal symptoms, improve their coping skills and strengthen their interpersonal relationships.

First Sunday of every month, Dr. Shrinivasa Bhat in association with Dr.P.V. Bhandary, Director A.V. Baliga Hospital and Department of Psychiatry KMC Manipal, conducts free mental health camps at Rotary Club Shankarapura , Udupi District for last 10 years.

The Faculty in Psychiatry department are conducting training programmes under DMHP programme in training health professionals to be more sensitive and competent in meeting the mental health needs of the community.

We also conduct School Mental Health Programs to tackle mental health issues in children, where we focus on stress management which is the most important ingredient for a happy and successful life.

Awareness and education programs for the general public, media appearances to educate about issues relevant to psychiatry, conducting Endosulfan camps and contributing actively to any of the contemporary public mental problems like farmers’ suicide etc - you would find that the faculty from our department will be enthusiastically involved.

Special psychiatric services (Monday to Fridays @Nitte; Thursdays @ Vittla) to cater to the needs of community based clients to assess and manage psychiatric and psychological issues. Clients requiring referral to higher medical centres will be provided with detailed clinical and laboratory investigations and further management.

Department of Oncology

Schemes applicable – Sampoorna Suraksha, Vajpayee Arogyashree, Yashashwini, Arogyabhagya, ESI, Kshema Health Card, Nerekere Kshema.

Facilities extended - Patient counselling, pain & palliative, day care, Chemotherapy for solid malignancy

Extension activities – attended Vajpayee camps at various places, attended radio programme for giving awareness about the department, information is given through brochures, and publicity is given through paper advertisement, radio and television.

Department of Ophthalmology

  • The department holds regular eye check-up camps during weekdays and Sundays. The patients requiring treatment, such as cataract surgery are brought to our hospital, and are operated free of cost under NetraJyothi Programme.
  • Department of Ophthalmology with the help of MCF Mangalore adopts two villages every year, a total of 6 eye camps are conducted in these villages every year.
  • Department of Ophthalmology regularly attends to patients at Nitte Satellite Centre, and Primary health centres at B.C. Road, every 1st week of each month and Farangipete every Tuesday.
  • Department of Ophthalmology in association with Akshyapatra (ISKCON) has started a year long programme of School Screening.
  • Regular visits to Gajria Hospital and ophthalmic surgeries under unit.

Our department has an enthusiastic faculty with excellent team work attitude and co operation. Speciality clinics like cornea clinic, glaucoma clinic, Retina Clinic Squint & oculoplasty clinic are conducted regularly. We have an excellent patient load with variety of cases.
