Set up in the year 2009 as a full- fledged separate entity, the Department of Nephrology has three full -time consultants with an Associate Professor and Head and two Assistant Professors and a multidisciplinary team comprising of technicians, nurses and a dedicated medico-social worker and transplant coordinator, offering high quality renal care to patients with kidney disease. In addition to this, the department is also actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education as well as education of nursing, pharmacy and allied services in various aspects of renal medicine.
The institution has been licenced by the State Govt in 2010 with current license valid till 2021 to perform renal transplantation both living and deceased donor and the dept has so far conducted 31 transplants so far. In November 2016, the department was also involved in the first ever swap kidney transplant in the Coastal Karnataka.
Outpatient Department for superspecialities runs on all days except sunday. OPD timings are from 9.00 AM to 4.00 PM.

Currently about 60 chronic kidney disease patients are undergoing maintenance hemodialysis apart from a large number of patients with acute renal failure admitted in medical and surgical ICU and wards needing temporary hemodialysis who benefit from the facility. There is an excellent vascular access service with three consultant urologists offering high quality care. The department has plans on setting up a peritoneal dialysis therapy unit in the near future. The department also has two satellite dialysis units with 4 bedded dialysis stations in Karkala and 5 bedded dialysis in Puttur with a total of 50 patients on dialysis and they are seen once a week on out- patient basis and managed by the medical consultants in the unit.
